Peter J. RobertsEditor and PublisherNewenglandwow.comP.O. Box 1841New London, CT 06320pjr@newenglandwow.comI’m going to STOP what I’m doing every Friday at noon,
just for sixty seconds, to stop the war.
Like tens of millions of Americans, and hundreds of millions of others on our great, green and troubled planet, I feel powerless to fully express my abhorrence at the war in Iraq. It is Bush’s war but it is our war too. He is unwilling to end the war. Our “rubberstamp” congress is, with some prominent but powerless exceptions, entirely bought and paid for by the right wing.So it is up to me and you to end this war and bring out troops home. Yes, we can send money to good causes and vote for good candidates. We can write letters to the editor and call up talk show. We can do all these things and much more but the war will continue. The taxes we pay will continue to support it and our leaders will continue to give us lip service to ending the killing that is done in our name.In truth, there isn’t much any of us can do about the war. I’m an old soldier. I’m 56 and marched against the war in Vietnam. I also got drafted. I didn’t have to go to Vietnam but I knew many who did. I did combat arms, logistics and even recruiting. I left the Army as an NCO. While I’m a liberal, and proud of it, I mention my military service to belie any rightwing suggestions that I’m just another, long-hair peace freak. Starting on Friday, March 31, 2006 at noon (Eastern USA time) I’m going to stop whatever it is I’m doing and pause for sixty seconds. It will be my personal and all too quiet protest about the war in Iraq. I might ask a friends at our church to ring the steeple bell at our church for the sixty seconds. That’s what I’m doing. If all of the millions of Americans who also think this war is wrong stopped what they were doing, maybe someone down in Washington would listen and our troops would be coming home.
Sometimes, doing nothing is doing something.
